    Research booking information

We need to know about the research you plan to do, including the number of projects involved in the booking.

Postgraduate students who are conducting research for a thesis are considered to be the leaders of their own projects.

We understand that things can get complicated when a whole lab is in the field together. Just do your best here and we can firm it up later.

Enter a number. If the exact number is not determined yet, enter a range. One principal investigator may be conducting more than one project during the field trip; include all such projects in the count. Also include in the count each postgraduate student research project .

This can be firmed up later and we'll eventually need titles for all projects. For projects new to LIRS, we need a brief project proposal. That must be uploaded at the end of this form.

What is the broad risk profile of dives that you must conduct on the proposed trip? This question does NOT apply to incidental dives that you might like to do if conditions are right and if time allows. Such dives may be approved on site following risk assessment. Nor does it apply to location of dives, which is covered in the boating section coming up. Most diving at LIRS falls into the 'standard risk' choice. We need to consider the feasibility of essential higher-risk dives before accepting your booking. Higher-risk dives include: - Dives to deeper than 20 metres - Night dives - Dives involving high exertion or heaving lifting - Rebreather diving - Cave diving - Dives with barrier nets or other potential sources of entanglement - Dives with spearguns or air-powered tools - Dives that involve deliberately handling dangerous animals, e.g. lionfish, cone snails, sharks, stingrays - Other dives that you consider to be higher-risk.

Aquarium space can be in high demand at some times of the year so you should flag your needs up front. Information about the aquarium system is here. Feel free to contact LIRS to discuss your needs (+61 7 40603977; lizard@australian.museum).

We need to know in advance what is essential for your project to make sure that it's not off the island for service or repair during your visit. Microscopes and balances are always available. LIRS has a random assortment of laboratory glassware and plasticware. If you need specific items, you can flag them using the 'other' option but you may need to bring them with you.

By this we mean - are you planning work in the same specific research field and using similar methods as you have done previously at LIRS? If you answer YES, we should recognise your name and have sufficient information from previous trips to assess your booking request. In that case, a project outline is not required. Please don't surprise us by turning up with a plan to do something entirely new! You should answer NO if you are new to LIRS, or if this is your first trip to LIRS as a postgraduate student doing your own thesis research (even if you have been involved with similar projects at LIRS before), or if you are planning something quite different to your previous work at LIRS. In that case, you will need to upload a brief project outline at the next step.
